Linlithgow - The Prospect of their Maj'ties Palace of Linlithgow
Linlithgow became a royal burgh in the twelfth century and consists of a main street with side lanes. Some of the houses were built by the Knights of St. John. This view is from the south with the palace in the background.
This image is taken from John Slezer's Theatrum Scotiae, 1693. Theatrum Scotiae is an important record of Scottish towns, castles and palaces in the 17th century. For most of these places, it contains some of the earliest views that survive.
Theatrum Scotiae is held in the National Library of Scotland.
The image is only available in A2 as any text or small details would not be legible in a smaller size.
